Local man Homecoming King at Lock Haven

Demetreus Addison of Montgomeryville, was named Homecoming King at the Lock Haven University homecoming on Saturday, October 15. Addison is a senior majoring in social work. With him are LHU Interim President Dr. Barbara B. Dixon and Homecoming Queen Sade Caesar.

Area student serves in Peru

A Perkasie native is participating in the Goshen (Ind.) College Study-Service Term (SST) in Peru during this fall semester, along with 10 other students. Goshen established an SST unit there in 2005.
Nathaniel Day, son of Jeffrey Day and Eunice Rush-Day of Perkasie, is majoring in English.
He is a 2008 graduate of Christopher Dock Mennonite High School. He left for Peru on Sept. 2 and will return to the United States on Dec. 1. Kevin and Heather Gary, along with their children, Evie, Lucas and Gabriel, are leading the unit. Kevin is associate professor of education at Goshen College.

Local students honored at Susquehanna University

Four local students were among more than 180 students honored as University Scholars at Susquehanna University.

Local students who received this honor include:

Kyle Robertson, a 2007 graduate of Souderton Area High School, is a senior majoring in music and business with an emphasis in marketing at Susquehanna and the son of Gregg and Margaret Robertson.

Victoria Scalfaro, a 2007 graduate of Gwynedd Mercy Academy, is a senior majoring in music education at Susquehanna and the daughter of Mollie and Anthony Scalfaro.

Tina Statkevicz, a 2007 graduate of Wissahickon High School, is a senior majoring in biology at Susquehanna and the daughter of Raymond and Dorothy Statkevicz.

Bryn Whitmire, a 2007 graduate of Souderton High School, is a senior majoring in mathematics and secondary education at Susquehanna and the daughter of Ken and Judi Whitmire.

Wissahickon graduate in honors program at Susquehanna University

Whitney Walsh of Ambler has been chosen to be a member of Susquehanna University’s highly selective Honors Program. She is a freshman psychology major.
Recognized as a model for other honors programs throughout the country, the Honors Program at Susquehanna offers a challenging program of study to students interested in a more independent and interdisciplinary approach than usually offered to an undergraduate. Discussion groups, lectures, off-campus visits, and residential programs complement Honors Program courses. The University Scholars’ House serves as the center for many honors activities including fireside chats, a film series, and Friday night coffeehouses.
Members are chosen for their natural curiosity, a genuine interest in learning, high energy, leadership, and academic standing in high school. Most Honors Program students ranked in the top five percent of their high school graduating class and scored between a 1200 and 1500 on SATs.
Walsh, a 2010 graduate of Wissahickon High School, is the daughter of Rick and Christi Walsh.

Harlesyville student participates in Study Service Term

Harleysville native Hannah Canaviri is participating in the Goshen College Study-Service Term (SST) in Egypt during this fall semester, along with 18 other students. They are the first group to go to Egypt and this is the first time that Arabic is the language studied by students on SST.
She is the daughter of Ponciana and Gina Canaviri of Harleysville and is majoring in history. She is a 2008 graduate of Santa Cruz (Bolivia) Christian Learning Center. She left for Egypt on Sept. 2 and will return to the United States on Dec. 1. Director of International Education Tom Meyers is leading the unit.

Local students recognized at Boston University

Three North Wales residents have recently been named to the Dean's List at Boston University for the Spring semester.

Local woman wins Avon Scholarship


The Avon Foundation for Women has awarded Christiana Karr from Lansdale, with a 2010 Avon Representative Scholarship. Karr will be attending Gwynedd-Mercy College in Gwynedd Valley, during the 2010-11 academic year. The scholarship is designed to assist independent Avon Sales Representatives who are enrolled (or who plan to enroll) in an undergraduate or graduate course of study leading to a degree in a field that allows them to advance their careers.

Scholarship recipients are selected on the basis of academic record, demonstrated leadership and participation in school and community service activities, honors, work experience, statement of goals and aspirations, unusual personal or family circumstances, and an outside appraisal. Academic and non-academic criteria are evaluated equally. Financial need is not considered.

Carol Kurzig, president of the Avon Foundation for Women, said: “The Avon Foundation for Women understands it is important for all Avon Sales Representatives to have the opportunity to continue their education to help pave the way to their future economic advancement. We are so pleased to be able to award Christiana Karr with this scholarship to further her education.”

Area student helps Susquehanna University

Lauren Brown of Blue Bell is helping to gain key support for Susquehanna University through its student calling program.

For more than 20 years, the Susquehanna student calling program has raised critical funds for the university. Currently, 39 students participate in the program, which operates for 10 weeks in the fall and six weeks in the spring. Student participants contact parents and alumni to encourage them to support the university by making a donation. Funds raised are used to support scholarships, laboratory equipment, research, athletics, the library and the arts, among other endeavors. The calling program aims to raise about $175,000 this year; last year student callers raised $156,000.

In addition to contacting parents and alumni, Brown’s responsibilities include updating the contact database and informing supporters of what is happening on campus.

Brown, sophomore biology major, is a 2009 graduate of Gwynedd-Mercy Academy and is the daughter of Maripat and Jeffrey Brown.

Area student particiaptes in Taylor University Chorale

Bobbie Morrone of Schwenksville, is a member of the Taylor University Concert Chorale for the 2010/2011 concert season.Membership in the Taylor University Chorale is open to all Taylor students on an audition basis. Repertoire is selected from the spectrum of sacred choral works, from Renaissance to Contemporary periods, and includes pieces such as Mozart's Coronation Mass, Chichester Psalms by Bernstein, Faure's Requiem, Messiah by Handel, and Brahms' A German Requiem. The Chorale performs on campus, appears in concerts with the Fort Wayne and Marion Philharmonic Orchestras, and tours throughout the United States and beyond. International tour destinations have included Great Britain, Austria, Italy, Germany, Scandinavia, Russia and Greece.

Lansdale woman elected to student government at Susquehanna University

Brianna Roth of Lansdale, has been elected 2011 class senator of the Student Government Association (SGA) by the Susquehanna University student body. She will hold the position for the 2010 academic year.
Roth, a theatre major, is a 2007 graduate of Gwynedd Mercy High School. She is the daughter of Vince and Judy Roth.

Local students receive academic scholarship from York College of Pennsylvania

The following local students, all freshmen at York College, received academic scholarships from the College:

Thomas Kaizar of Telford, a Secondary Education - Mathematics major and graduate of Souderton Area High School, received the Dean's Academic Scholarship, awarded to freshmen who graduated in the upper two-fifths of their high school class and have a combined SAT math and critical reading score of 1100-1240.

Nicole Thompson of Ambler, a Elementary Education major and graduate of Hatboro-Horsham Senior High School, received the Dean's Academic Scholarship, awarded to freshmen who graduated in the upper two-fifths of their high school class and have a combined SAT math and critical reading score of 1100-1240.

Dylan Umstead of Green Lane, a Mechanical Engineering major and graduate of Upper Perkiomen High School, received the Dean's Academic Scholarship, awarded to freshmen who graduated in the upper two-fifths of their high school class and have a combined SAT math and critical reading score of 1100-1240.

Kacie Cisarik of Pennsburg, a Nursing major and graduate of Upper Perkiomen High School, received the Dean's Academic Scholarship, awarded to freshmen who graduated in the upper two-fifths of their high school class and have a combined SAT math and critical reading score of 1100-1240.
