Perkasie woman included in Who's Who

Rachel Bradshaw of Perkasie, a history major at Western New England, has been selected for inclusion in the 2010-2011 edition of Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. Bradshaw is one of 31 students from Western New England who have been selected as national outstanding campus leaders.

Area woman part of KU's women's cross country team

The Kutztown University women's cross country team -- The Golden Bears – recently finished second out of 26 teams at the NCAA Atlantic Regional championships , earning them a return trip to the NCAA Division II Championships in Louisville, KY on Dec. 4. KU also finished second at last year's regional's, along with finishing a program-high 14th at nationals.

Among those running for KU was freshman Carolyn Fergus who placed 90th (25:22.7) Fergus is a 2010 North Penn graduate. Fergus is is majoring in Secondary English Education.

Area students inducted into honor society at Ithaca College

The following students were inducted into Ithaca College's Oracle Honor Society in November. The fall ceremony honors students who have completed their first semester ranked in the top five percent of their academic schools.
Hannah Coulson, a North Wales resident, is a TVR, Video Production major in the college's Park School of Communication.
Megan Wright, a North Wales resident, is a Performance, Voice major in the college's School of Music.

Lansdale resident recognized at national conference

Micah Beckstead, of Lansdale, was recently honored with an Outstanding Student Award by the BACCHUS Network at the organization's 2010 General Assembly, held in Indianapolis, IN.
Beckstead attended the conference as a member of the DeSales University PACE (Peers Advising Counseling Educating) Team, which was also recognized at the General Assembly. Beckstead is a senior physician assistant major at DeSales University.
To be eligible for an award, a group or individual must be nominated.

Local student honored, participates in concert

Recently, The Lock Haven University Marching Band performed their annual band revue. Demetreus Addison from Montgomeryville, a Social Work major, helped make the concert a success performing on trumpet.
Addison was among graduating seniors honored at the concert.

Local woman receives research grant

Kristen Imboden, a senior education major from Lansdale, is among 13 students from the Shippensburg University Honors Program that have received grants to support their undergraduate research and creative projectsduring the 2010-2011 academic year.
The university’s Institute for Public Service recentlyannounced more than $7,100 would be awarded to Honors Program students.
The students’ undergraduate research and creative projects span a variety of fields,including elementary and secondary education, psychology, history, English, theatre arts, humanresource management, physics, and biology, and will take multiple forms, including laboratoryresearch, field work, and artistic projects.
Imboden's project: “Leading Reading:Improving Literacy Education in the Dominican Republic,” focuses on researching best practices in literacy instruction and implement and evaluate literacy-related strategies in teacher training workshops.

Local man inducted into Alpha Epsilon Society

Lansdale resident John Piree, an accounting major at La Salle University, was recently inducted into the University's Alpha Epsilon Society, which recognizes high academic achievement with community involvement and service.

Area woman named to honor society at University of Massachusetts

The University of Massachusetts, Boston recently named Shea Miller of Chalfont, to the Alpha Lambda Delta Academic Honor Society for Freshmen. Shea, an Anthropology major, was one of 106 students at UMass Boston to be named to the honor society.
To be eligible for the Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society, a student must maintain a 3.5 grade point average or better during the first term or year of attendance at UMass Boston. This year's class of honorees at UMass Boston included students from across the United States and from 15 countries.

Area student is Rotary Club Student of the Month

Upper Dublin student Sydney Licht was honored at the Rotary Club of Ambler's luncheon meeting at the William Penn Inn on Nov. 16. Licht is a member of the National Honor Society, Spanish Club, Autism Awareness Club and Cheerleading squad. She also was involved in the Service Learning and Public Policy Leadership Conference, and spent time doing community service in Ghana, Africa.

Local students achieve recognition in collegiate sports

On Nov. 13, the Clearwater Christian College men's soccer team won its second consecutive national championship. The National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) Division II champions defeated Ohio Christian University 2-0 in the final game.
In addition to the championship title, several students were named with All-Tournament and All-American awards. The following local students were included in the national title:
Lucas Hollenbach from Sellersville, was a member of the 2010 NCCAA National Championship team. Lucas was also named 2nd Team All-Region. Lucas is a 2007 graduate from Faith Christian Academy in Sellersville, and the son of Russell and Becky Hollenbach of Sellersville.
Dexter Hollenbach from Sellersville, was a member of the 2010 NCCAA National Championship team. Dexter is a 2007 graduate from Faith Christian Academy in Sellersville, PA and the son of Russell Becky Hollenbach of Sellersville.
Walter Scharf from Quakertown, was a member of the 2010 NCCAA National Championship team. Walter is a 2007 graduate from Faith Christian Academy in Sellersville, and the son of Walt and Susan Scharf of Quakertown.
Garrett Hollenbach from Sellersville,was a member of the 2010 NCCAA National Championship team. Garrett is a 2010 graduate from Faith Christian Academy in Sellersville and the son of Russell and Becky Hollenbach of Sellersville.

Ursinus College announces first Rhodes Scholar

Class of 2010 Ursinus graduate Aakash K. Shah, of Cliffside Park, N.J. is Ursinus’s first Rhodes Scholar, the Rhodes Trust announced today. Shah is now in his first year at Harvard Medical School.
Shah graduated in May with distinguished honors research in sociology and honors research in biology and neuroscience. He received bachelor’s degrees in Biology, Neuroscience and Inequality Studies, with minors in Chemistry and Sociology. He was a Goldwater Scholar, Zacharias Scholar, Bonner Scholar and junior member of Phi Beta Kappa. He also participated on the varsity track team.
Shah’s address to his classmates at Commencement last May described how during his work at a rural medical clinic India, he was able to connect to texts he read in his Common Intellectual Experience freshman coursework. As a biology and neuroscience major, he became interested in the applications of medicine and public health. He plans a career combining clinical and academic medicine with global health policy.
He joins 32 American men and women chosen as Rhodes Scholars representing the U. S. Rhodes Scholarships provide all expenses for two or three years of study at the University of Oxford in England. This group will enter Oxford in Oct. 2011. Shah plans to pursue the MSc. degree in Comparative Social Policy at Oxford.
The Rhodes scholarships were created in 1902 by the will of Cecil Rhodes. The newly announced scholars were selected from 209 finalists from 88 different colleges and universities by Committees of Selection in each of 16 U.S. districts.
Ursinus Interim President John E.F. Corson and President-elect Bobby Fong both spoke to the ideals that the Rhodes organization emphasizes. “You represent the high ideals of Ursinus and liberal education: preparation for citizenship and leadership,” wrote Fong, who is currently President of Butler University in Indiana.
Corson noted that Shah’s civic engagement activities at Ursinus spoke to his desire to be of service to others, and that Shah has credited his faculty mentors at Ursinus. “Aakash is a wonderful first-time Rhodes representative from Ursinus,” he said.
According to the organization, the criteria are “high academic achievement, integrity of character, a spirit of unselfishness, respect for others, potential for leadership and physical vigor.”

Local man recognized by Gettysburg College

Kevin Schmitt, a Gettysburg College senior from Harleysville, has been awarded a 2010 Linnaean Award. Winners are chosen by peers based on the recipients' efforts to improve the campus community, excellence in academic endeavors, and overall achievements during their college careers.
Schmitt is majoring in economics and international affairs. On campus, he serves as concerts chair and vice president of finance for the Campus Activities Board, program assistant for the First Year Experience, a senator on Student Senate, and a campus tour guide. He is also a member of the Omicron Delta Epsilon and Pi Lambda Sigma Honors Societies, Senior Class Gift Campaign, the Student Life Committee, and Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity.

St. Stans 8th-graders win at math, science

St. Stanislaus Parish School in Lansdale recently won the Math and Science Bowl held at Lansdale Catholic High School.

Area students earn collegiate sports honors

Recently the Clearwater Christian College men's and women's soccer teams and women's volleyball team competed in the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) Division 2 South Region Championship.
Both the men's soccer team and the women's volleyball team earned the Regional Championship title and automatically advance to the National Championships to be held November 10-13 in Kissimmee, Florida.
Lucas Hollenbach of Sellersville, was awarded 2nd Team All-Region for the CCC men's soccer team. Hollenbach is a 2007 graduate of Faith Christian Academy in Sellersville. Hollenbach is the child of Russell and Becky Hollenbach of Sellersville.
Danielle Heffernan of Chalfont, was awarded Honorable Mention All-Region for the CCC women's volleyball team. Heffernan is a 2007 graduate of Upper Bucks Christian School in Sellersville. Heffernan is the child of David and Debbie Heffernan of Chalfont.
