BRENDA SPINELLI

Two students were recently honored as the Ambler Rotary Club's Students of the Month for December. They were honored at a  luncheon meeting  at the William Penn Inn.  They were recognizes for their work and as role models for the "Service Above Self" Rotary motto.

 

Brenda Spinelli is a senior at Gwynedd Mercy Academy. Judith Owens (V.P. for Academic Affairs) writes: "Brenda is the 'go-to' person when something needs to be accomplished. She is a cheerful, enthusiastic young lady who has strong feelings and opinions that reflect her value system. When volunteers are needed you can count on Brenda to raise her hand and see the task through to the end. Her motto in the Mercy family is 'the more the merrier,' and her welcoming spirit insures that everyone is included." Brenda is a member of the Gwynedd Mercy volleyball team, and an active participant in the Ministry and Service Organization where she is responsible for planning and organizing trips to a residence for formerly homeless women.

Cori Rosen is a senior at Germantown Academy. Peter McVeigh (Coordinator for Community Service at GA) writes: "Cori is an outstanding student, primarily because she genuinely cares about matters of the mind. Continually demonstrating all the qualities that underscore the behavior and attitude of the outstanding student, she is always ready to discuss the most significant issues under consideration, whether they be historical themes or concepts related to more contemporary events." Cori is co-chair for the Ethics Society and a senior leader in the Community Service Organization, which works with the Mattie Dixon Community Cupboard in Ambler, St. John's Hospice, the Intensive Care Unit at Children's Hospital and the Make-A- Wish Foundation.

Hatfield Elementary 6th grade Student Council and the entire school worked through the month of December to help needy families this holiday season.  They partnered  with American Legion Post 206 and a NP student working on is senior project to accomplish their goal.

Eagleville resident Christie Mikelsons received her bachelor of science in nursing from Neumann University  Dec. 19. The evening nursing program graduated 18 students.

The North Penn School District announces that nine students were selected to represent the district at the 2011-2012 District Orchestra Festival that will be held at Central Buck High School South from Feb. 9 to 11.

 Selected were  ol students Emily Buehler, Bria Blackshear, Suyog Padgaonkar, Max Song, Jodie Spross, Zach Travis and Li Jia Xie. In addition, two ninth grade students were selected to participate in the District Festival. Congratulations to Puneeth Guruprasad, a ninth grade student from Pennbrook Middle School, and Ellen Shi, a ninth grade student from Penndale Middle School.

Local Residents Graduate with Honors from Millersville University

MILLERSVILLE -- The following area residents graduated with honors from Millersville University of Pennsylvania on Sunday, December 18, 2011:

Sara Ashley Bowman, of Harleysville, Pa., graduated cum laude. Bowman earned a bachelor of science degree in art education.

Elizabeth Kolessar, of Audubon, Pa., graduated cum laude. Kolessar earned a bachelor of science degree in elementary & special education.

Theresa A Fitti, of Quakertown, Pa., graduated magna cum laude. Fitti earned a bachelor of science degree in special education.

The Grade Point Average (GPA) breakdown for Latin honors is: Cum Laude 3.50-3.74; Magna Cum Laude 3.75-3.94 and Summa Cum Laude 3.95-4.00 (the highest earned academic honor the University can bestow).

LOCK HAVEN -- The Lock Haven University 2011 winter commencement ceremony was held Saturday, December 17. There were 307 degree candidates from the College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Education and Human Services.

Alyse Wampole of Sellersville (major - English) made the Honor Roll during the Fall 2011 at Gardener-Webb University, Boiling Springs, N.C.   The Honor Roll recognizes those outstanding students who achieve a grade point average (GPA) between 3.2 and 3.7 for the semester.

Alicia C. Madonna daughter of Tom and Jodi Madonna of Harleysville became a member of Phi Sigma Theta National Honor Society at West Virginia University.
Phi Sigma Theta is a national honor society dedicated to recognizing and rewarding academic achievement in undergraduates and institutions of high learning.

In an induction ceremony held in Assumption Hall at Gwynedd-Mercy College, ten criminal justice students became formally affiliated with the Kappa Delta Chapter of Alpha Phi Sigma, the National Criminal Justice Honor Society.

The students are as follows: Gregory Borgmann, Michaela Brass, Kathleen Coughlin, Kevin Fesick, Anthony Fleming, Leigh Manduke, Ashley McCleaster, Kevin Miller, Christopher Santos, and Regina Sellman.

Honorable Carolyn Tornetta Carluzzio, of the Montgomery County Court of Common Pleas was on hand to inspire students to pursue their dreams in the face of adversity. Making the most of opportunities and taking initiative were a few of the themes she stressed.

Professor Walt Zdunowski, director of the Criminal Justice Program spoke highly of his students—who are required to maintain a 3.0 grade point average and rank in the top 35 percent of their class.
