Local student receives degree from Susquehanna University

Steven R. McQue of Harleysville graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in creative writing and a Bachelor of Music degree in music as Susquehanna University closed its 152nd academic year with annual commencement exercises on May 16th. He is the son of Robert and Patricia McQue of Harleysville and a graduate of Souderton Area Senior High School. McQue’s activities at Susquehanna included serving the Office of the Chaplain as the Deacon of Worship and a serving as a teaching assistant for Asian literature. He was the winner of the 2010 Juliet Gibson Memorial Prize for outstanding writing and graduated cum laude. Following graduation, McQue plans to seek employment and apply to graduate studies for a Master’s degree in fine arts.

The following students have been named to the Dean's List at the University of New Hampshire for the spring semester of the 2009 - 2010 academic year.

Students named to the Dean's List at the University of New Hampshire are students who have earned recognition through their superior scholastic performance. Highest Honors are awarded to students who earn a semester grade point average of 3.7 or better out of a possible 4.0. Students with a 3.5 to 3.69 average are awarded high honors and students whose grade point average is 3.2 through 3.49 are awarded honors.

Area students participate in engineering design conference

The following students participated in the 15th annual Richard J. Fasenmyer Engineering Design Conference, held at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College.
Jason Bobsein, from Sellersville, presented "Induction Barrel Heating," a group research project. Bobsein graduated this spring with a B.S. in plastics engineering technology and worked with Jonathan Meckley, associate professor of engineering.
Keith Estelle, from Blue Bell, presented "BAH Source Code Assessment Project," a group research project. Estelle graduated this spring with a B.S. in software engineering and worked with Dr. Simon Fan, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering.
The conference is hosted by the college's School of Engineering, which requires a yearlong, capstone applied design experience for each of its degree programs. In total, 170 engineering students presented the results of their senior design projects to professors, fellow students and industry representatives.

Area student wins scholarship

FREEDOM CREDIT UNION ANNOUNCES 2010 SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS
Freedom Credit Union announced the 2010 Freedom Credit Union ScholarshipWinners. Freedom Credit Union is awarding four $1,000 scholarships to qualified high school and collegestudents, who are Freedom Members, to use in furthering their education.
This year’s winners include Christina Olindo (Sellersville,) a junior at Millersville University, studyingElementary Education.
To qualify, students were asked to submit a copy of their most recent academic transcripts and writea 500-word essay on the following topic: “During the past year, Freedom Credit Union celebrated 75years of serving its Members. As a young credit union member, how have you utilized credit unionservices to accomplish your goals thus far, and how do you see the credit union helping you toestablish a sound financial future?” Scholarship winners will be announced in the July 2010 issue ofFreedom’s Member newsletter, Financial Focus.

Local students graduate from Cazenovia College

Cazenovia College's 185th Commencement Ceremony took place on Saturday, May 15. Several area residents were among more than180 graduates.
Nikita A. Poland, of Chalfont, received a bachelor of professional studies degree in management specializing in equine business management.
Poland is a member of the Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society.
Jill E. Konigsbauer, of Perkasie, received a bachelor of fine arts degree cum laude, in interior design with a psychology minor.
Konigsbauer is a member of the Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society.

Patel of Hatfield, graduated with a doctor of pharmacy degree . She is the daughter of Vinu J. and Kakila V. Patel. She was a member of American Pharmacists Association. Dipun G. Souderton local earns scholarship

Brandon K. Kiser of Souderton was awarded an annual scholarship by Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants (PICPA). Kiser is a student at Messiah College.
Kiser is a member of Messiah's honors program and the Dean's List. He is an officer of the Investment Club and is a resident assistant. Kiser participates in the IRS’ Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program.
Scholarship recipients are accounting majors who have completed a minimum of 36 credit hours in general study. They are selected on the basis of intellectual capacity, leadership potential, financial need, and intent to pursue a career in accounting. This scholarship renews each year until graduation, as long as the recipient maintains a 3.0 GPA and remains an accounting major.

Locals participate in inquiry program at Goshen College

This summer, 29 Goshen College students are participating in the college's three inquiry programs.
Of those students, 12 are participating in the Camping Inquiry Program (CIP), where they are working at Christian-based summer camps throughout the country to develop leadership skills and grow in their faith.
A Telford resident is among the participants. Jessica Gotwals, a sophomore nursing major from Telford, is working at Spruce Lake Retreat in Canadensis. Gotwals, daughter of R. Brent and Julia Gotwals, is a 2009 graduate of Souderton Area High School and attends Blooming Glen Mennonite Church.

Seven students are participating in the Service Inquiry Program (SIP), where they are doing service work at different assignments around the country and the world.
Two graduates of Christopher Dock Mennonite High School are among the participants.
Corrine Jager, a sophomore social work major from Sellersville, is working with Haley House in Boston, Mass. Jager, daughter of Adolph and Molly Jager, is a 2008 graduate of Christopher Dock Mennonite High School and attends Blooming Glen Mennonite Church.
Rebecca Weaver, a junior collegiate studies major from Harleysville, is working with Mennonite Central Committee in Bolivia. Weaver, daughter of Craig and Judy Weaver, is a 2008 graduate of Christopher Dock Mennonite High School and attends Franconia Mennonite Church.

SASD students compete at history event

Students from Indian Crest Middle School participated at the National History Day State Competition at Millersville University under the direction of Gifted Support Teacher Joe Gunn. This year's theme was innovation and impact.

Local student receives theological fellowship award

Brendon T. Derstine, a junior this fall at EasternMennonite University, has been selected to receive a 2010 Fund forTheological Education (FTE) Undergraduate Fellowship, which recognizesstudents who have gifts for leadership and are exploring ministry as avocation.
As an FTE Undergraduate Fellow, Derstine will attend the 2010 FTE Leaders in Ministry Conferenceto be held June 16-20 at Boston University School of Theology.
Derstine, from Harleysville,is a history and social science majorwith secondary education licensure. He is a member of Franconia MennoniteChurch.
Nancy R. Heisey, department chair and professor of Bible and religionat EMU, nominated Derstine for the fellowship award, which is funded byLilly Endowment Inc."The undergraduate fellowship is prestigious and the selection process ishighly competitive," said Dr. Heisey.
"The FTE conference that Brendonwill attend is an exciting event, where award recipients are broughttogether with distinguished theologians, pastors and church leaders forthoughtful exchange, including lectures, worship, workshops and informalinteraction."
FTE Undergraduate Fellows are selected by a national committee oftheological educators and church leaders. Students must be nominated by aprofessor, school administrator, pastor or campus minister; hold a minimum3.0 grade point average; have an interest in pastoral ministry anddemonstrate leadership in a church or school community.
FTE awards thefellowships to help ensure quality leadership and inclusive excellence inpastoral ministry.

Lansdale's Stashefski wins academic award

Amy Stashefski, at right, a resident of Lansdale, won the Dr. Adam Drayer Award for Demonstrated Excellence in the Teacher Education Program at the 61st Commencement exercises of King’s College, Wilkes-Barre.

Stashefski graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor of arts degree in elementary education with a second major in early childhood education. She also completed the Teacher Training Program prior to Commencement.

Area students graduate from Ursinus College

Recent Ursinus College graduates include:


Megan A. Ditter graduated from Ursinus College with a bachelor of business administration degree in management during commencement exercises on Saturday, May 15, on the college campus. More than 340 students received bachelor’s degrees.
A graduate of North Penn High School, she and her husband Scott are residents of Collegeville of Pa. 19426.
Allison S. Injaian graduated from Ursinus College with a bachelor of science degree in biology, a minor in Spanish and departmental honors in biology during commencement exercises on Saturday, May 15, on the college campus. More than 340 students received bachelor’s degrees.
While at Ursinus, she was named to the Dean's List and to Beta Beta Beta, the national honor society for the biological sciences. She was president of Tau Sigma Gamma sorority, treasurer of the Inter-Greek Council and a peer advisor. She studied abroad with the Ursinus program in Mexico. As an Ursinus Summer Fellow, she researched small mammal population densities in a fragmented forest in Montgomery County, Pa., and interviewed prospective students for admission to Ursinus. She has accepted employment with Literacy Americorps.
A graduate of North Penn High School, Injaian is the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Mike Injaian of North Wales .

Jamie Lynn Bosler of Harleysville graduated with a bachelor of science degree in nutrition and bachelor of arts degree in psychology.

Brianna Marie Powell of North Wales graduated with a bachelor of science degree in nursing. Listed in Who's Who Among Students at American Universities and Colleges, Powell was a member of Sigma Theta Tau international nursing honor society. She also served as co-chair of the Honor and Judicial Board; secretary of the Class of 2010; historian for the Student Nurses Association; a head orientation assistant; and peer tutor. She has been elected to serve as corresponding agent for the Class of 2010 after graduation.
Powell presented research on “Effects of Childhood Obesity” and “Global Health Nursing in Belize” during the Cedar Crest College Health and Wellness Conference. She did her clinical work at Lehigh Valley, St. Luke’s, Sacred Heart, and Good Shepherd hospitals.

Catherine Rose Poos, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Poos of Lansdale, graduated summa cum laude from Dickinson College on May 23 with a BA in international business & management. NPSH student earns honor at state computer fair

North Penn High School senior Rebecca Fitzer and North Penn High School junior Spencer Hill recently participated in the Pennsylvania State Computer Fair.

Fitzer’s individual graphic design poster and Fitzer’s and Hill’s collaborative computer fair logo won honors at the regional level to advance to the state level. On May 24th, Fitzer and Hill visited Dickinson College in Carlisle, PA to compete in the state fair. Fitzer’s graphic design poster received second place in the graphic design division of the competition.

The poster was an anti-smoking piece based on the game “Clue.” Written in smoke to the left of a girl holding a cigarette is “Miss Scarlett killed herself with a cigarette.” Fitzer said that the idea of the poster is that choosing to smoke is like playing a game with your life. She used the image of dice tumbling onto the board to show the chances that individuals take when they smoke.

Fitzer originally created the poster as an entrance requirement to the Graphic Arts program at Penn State University, main campus, where she will attend school in the fall.
