Sisters graduate form Millersville University

Emily and Jennifer Carp, of Harleysville, graduated Magna Cum Laude from Millersville University of Pennsylvania, December 19, 2010. Both received a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary and Early Childhood Education.
The Grade Point Average (GPA) breakdown for Latin honors is: Cum Laude 3.50-3.74; Magna Cum Laude 3.75-3.94 and Summa Cum Laude 3.95-4.00.

Oak Park Elementary robotics team wins trophy

The Oak Park Elementary School’s robotics team won the “Teamwork Trophy” award this year at the recent “Body Forward — Tune Up in PA” Lego Robotics competition at Lansdale Catholic recently.
The Oak Park Elementary School team was composed of fourth, fifth and sixth grade students who competed with 48 teams of middle school-aged students from Pennsylvania, New Jersey and South Carolina. Oak Park Elementary was the only North Penn school in the competition.

Third-grade teacher Donna Grabner of Oak Park Elementary School and fourth-grade teacher Brynn Grabner of Inglewood Elementary School were the team leaders.

The Oak Park Robotics Club is supported by North Penn Educational Foundation grants and the ExxonMobil Educational Alliance Grant sponsored by Joe Spaniel’s Exxon station in Hatfield.

Area students graduate from Lock Haven University

The Lock Haven University 2010 winter commencement ceremony was held Sunday, Dec. 12. There were 254 degree candidates from the College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Education and Human Services.

MCCC Students Inducted into Phi Theta Kappa Honors SocietyDec

A total of 203 students were inducted into the Montgomery County Community College Alpha Kappa Zeta chapter of Phi Theta Kappa (PTK), the international honor society of two-year colleges, during the fall 2010 semester. Skippack woman joins medical trip to Africa

Mary Kate Brady of Skippack, and three other Wilkes University senior nursing students and assistant professor of nursing Wanda Ruppert, accepted a check from the Zeta Psi organization who raised money to fund their medical trip to Burkina Faso and Kaya, Africa, from Jan. 14 through Jan. 22. Brady and her team will travel with an interdisciplinary medical-surgical team to provide nursing care and health care education to people in need. Brady is the daughter of Steve Brady. Zeta Psi is a chapter of Sigma Theta Tau Nursing Honor Society.

Area students recognized as Provost Scholars

The following students from Montgomery County have been recognized as a Provost Scholar at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. At the start of the fall semester, any undergraduate student who meets the following requirement is eligible to be named a Provost Scholar: a current junior with a minimum of 45 semester hours earned at IUP with a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher. Provost Scholar recognition is given only once during a student's time of study at IUP.

North Penn HS students earn honors at FBLA Conference

North Penn High School students earned honors at the recent Region 20 Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) Regional Leadership Conference that was held at North Penn High School.
Out of 52 participating NPHS students, North Penn walked away with 19 first place ribbons, four second place ribbons, seven third place ribbons, four fourth place ribbons, one fifth place ribbon and one sixth place ribbon.
Thirty of these students now qualify to attend the FBLA State Leadership Conference and Competitions in Hershey, Pennsylvania from April 3-6.
There were 543 students participating in the conference in total from 12 high schools in this area. The North Penn High School FBLA is advised by NPHS business teachers Linda Westerlund and Ken McLarnon.

Souderton students recognized with community service award


The Student Community Service Award, an initiative of the Indian Valley Chamber of Commerce’s Education Committee, was created to recognize students for their outstanding contributions to society through significant community service. This award serves the dual purpose of recognizing such contributions and providing role models for other students and the community at large.
Five students were recently honored at a luncheon at the Indian Valley Country Club for being selected for the 2010 award. They are Matt Breen, Souderton Area High School; Maddie Goertel, Souderton Area High School; Caroline Lynch, Christopher Dock Mennonite High School; Jillian Leatherman, Christopher Dock Mennonite High School; and Matt Roynan, Souderton Area High School.
To qualify for this recognition, nominees met the following criteria: they must be in grades 9 through 12; must demonstrate leadership by having established a new project or enhancing an existing project which benefits the community; must demonstrate the six pillar of Character: Trustworthiness, Responsibility, Respect, Fairness, Caring, and Citizenship; and must demonstrate outstanding community service.

Souderton Area HS names students of the month

Students from Souderton Area High School have been named as Students of the Month for December. Students are nominated by their teachers for showing exceptional characteristics such as responsibility, leadership, respect, honesty, and citizenship.
Freshman Andrew Curotto, also known as AJ, is a shooting guard on the high school basketball team. His favorite subject is math because he likes working with numbers and is considering a future career in business. He is the son of Jim and Chris Curotto of Harleysville.

Freshman Amanda Cole, divides her time out of the classroom between horseback riding, voice lessons, and hip-hop and modern dance. She loves to sing and not surprisingly says chorus is her favorite class. She hopes to go to college after high school to become an equine veterinarian and run a rescue farm for endangered and retired horses. She is the daughter of Steve and Lisa Cole of Harleysville.

Sophomore Ridgley Schultz, also known as Ridge, plays the position of middie on the boys’ lacrosse team. He volunteers at Grandview Hospital and serves on the Principal’s Student Advisory Council and tenth grade student government. His favorite subject is physics. He enjoys conducting experiments and learning why and how things work. His future plans include college and lacrosse. He is the son of Sandy and Greg Schulte of Harleysville.

Sophomore Rebekah Hershey, also known as Bekah, is a member of Students Against Violating the Earth (SAVE). She plays field hockey and lacrosse and is active with her youth group. She says science is her favorite subject because she enjoys learning about the environment. She hopes to attend Boston University one day. She is the daughter of Pete and MJ Hershey of Harleysville.

Junior Alexander Cupo, also known as Cupo, is vice president of the Leo Club and is a member of Students Against Violating the Earth (SAVE), National Honor Society, and Ace Mentoring. He plays the cello in the orchestra. Alex loves learning about the history of our country and the world. He follows current events and wants to be involved with policy to be more informed about the way our country operates. He is the son of Al and Julia Cupo of Harleysville.

Junior Christina Harris is the secretary of Key Club. She is a member of student government, Link Crew, Movement (Bible study), National Honor Society, CASH tutor, and concert choir. Away from school she plays the piano and is very involved in her church. Her favorite subjects are science and First Aid. She enjoys seeing how everything fits together and plans to attend college to major in nursing. She is the daughter of Bruce and Sherry Harris of Harleysville.

Senior Nicholas Spause, also known as Nick, is recognized for his athletic performance on the high school football team as captain and right tackle. Math is Nick’s favorite subject. He is fielding offers from a variety of colleges and hopes to study sports management and business when he decides. He is the son of Dave and Sharon Spause of Harleysville.

Senior Kathryn Kundrod, is the president of the National Honor Society, the business manager of the student newspaper, The Arrowhead, commissioner of Link Crew, coordinator for the CASH tutoring program, and serves as one of the student representatives to the school board. She is also a member of the school leadership team, student council, and Students Against Violating the Earth (SAVE). Her favorite subjects are physics and calculus because she likes problem solving. Kathryn hopes to study biomedical engineering after high school. She is the daughter of Jim and Gita Kundrod of Harylesville

NMTCC Health Occupations students name officers

North Montco Technical Career Center Health Occupations students recently selected their Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) officers for the 2010-2011 school year. Local man receives research grant

Ryan Focht, of Hatfield, a student at Millersville University of Pennsylvania, recently received a fall 2010 Neimeyer-Hodgson Research Grant. Focht, a Chemistry major, was awarded $ 525.00 for the The Synthesis and Reactions of Some 1,2-Diaclydiaziridines project.
Recipients of these funds must be full-time undergraduate students at Millersville. The total grant amount awarded for the fall is $3392.27 to 13 students. This program was established to recognize individuals in pursuit of scholarly research.

Hatfield woman wins first place in broadcast competition

Jessica Do, of Hatfield, a junior at Millersville University and member of the University's chapter of the National Broadcast Society (NBS) won a first place award for video commercial and video feature segment as well as an honorable mention in the news package category at this year's regional conference, Nov. 12-14.
Twenty-three Millersville University NBS students used their skills to create multiple award-winning productions at this year's conference, held at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Millersville's NBS chapter won nine first place production awards, five honorable mentions and a rookie of the year award.

Area students hit the stage

Three area students were among Lock Haven University dance students participating in a recent recital the school. The students performed for full houses on the evenings of November 19 and 20 and at a November 20 matinee:
Ashley Krueger of Souderton, a History major, Dancer.
Tiffany Fellenz of Quakertown, an Accounting major, Dancer.
Rachael Radomski of Hatfield, a Communication Media major, Dancer.
Under the leadership of Associate professor of Dance Jayme Host, the students performed a variety of dance styles, including ballet, tap, and modern techniques. One number that was a hit with the audience was "Lovers of Light," in which the dancers performed a dance similar to the famed "Riverdance." In the piece entitled "Family," the audience heard the dancers speaking about the significance of family while they expressed the meaning of their remarks through dance. "Encounters" expressed through dance the depth and complexity of romantic relationships. In all, the dancers performed thirteen dances. All of the dances were choreographed by Jayme Host and her students.

LC graduate induced into history honor society

David M. Glinski, son of Mary and Robert Glinski of Hatfield, was recently inducted into the Phi Alpha Theta History Honor Society at Temple University. He is also a member of the Golden Key International Honour Society. He will graduate from Temple University in December 2010 with a bachelor's degree in history. He is a 2006 graduate of Lansdale Catholic High School.

Local woman inducted into communication honor society

Valerie D'Angiolini of Hatfield, a student at Quinnipiac University, was inducted into the Tau Delta Chapter of Lambda Pi Eta, the National Communication Association Honor Society, during a recent ceremony at Quinnipiac.
To be inducted, communications students must have a minimum overall grade point average of 3.25 and a minimum communications studies grade point average of 3.25. They must also complete at least 60 credits, three communications courses and achieve junior standing.

Local woman presents research project

Kristin Kajari, a senior biology major, is a daughter of Joseph and Carin Kajari and a graduate of North Penn High School, was one of 15 Westminster College senior biology and molecular biology majors that recently presened their capstone research projects at the college.
Her project, “The Role of Sleep Disturbance and Its Relation to Neurodegenerative Disorders in Fruit Flies (Drosophila melanogaste),” is advised by Dr. Lesley Ashmore, Westminster visiting assistant professor of biology.
The capstone experience permits opportunity for structured reflection on the value of education in and beyond the major and provides an opportunity to strengthen communication and problem-solving skills.
